Freemotion Quilting technique tip

At the FVQG show in June I visited with some customers about my Whirligigs quilt’s quilting. The lesson I had learned when I quilted that quilt was that there is no need to know my complete quilting plan for a quilt when I start it. A friend showed me that if I just start with what I do know how to quilt, when that part is done I will have an idea for the next part of the quilt. And on it goes… the entire quilt gets quilted one step at a time. Here’s the photo of the quilting so you can see what I mean…

Now for the second part of the quilting lesson… the friends I was visiting with at the FVQG show told me about a teacher who had taught a technique for free-motion quilting. That teacher selects her backing fabric based on it having an interesting design. She starts her quilting from the top of the quilt, outlining all the main motifs of the quilt. Once she has done that, she turns the quilt over and quilts from the back all the background areas (which she can tell from the outlining she’s done). In all these background areas she quilts following the design of the backing fabric! Now how smart is that???!!! Please try it and tell me how you like it.

Ok… short message this time… but I’m pretty proud I could do any message after 3 kids 8 - 6 - 4 for 5 days! Enjoy the rest of your summer!!!!
