Hi folks! I'm smiling today because I have only two more days of cutting and packing before my three shows in three weekends sprint to the finish line of show season! Next weekend is the Parksville quilter's guild show, and I'll be on the Island visiting one last time this season. I love visiting there:-)
The Japan Convenience Store Phenomenon
It happens to every Japanese woman who comes and stays with us. They enter a Canadian 7/11 with a set of expectations... a spotless facility, well lit and well organized, filled with at least one kind of almost anything you might need for your daily living, fabulous take out food options, lattes, and staff who will bend over backwards to be helpful. Then the Canadian reality strikes them in their face and they quickly exit, shaking their heads at what they've just encountered... dirty floors, dozy staff, junk food... So we have a little discussion when they arrive home, resetting their expectations of convenience stores, and paying homage to the Japanese convenience store. When I travelled in Japan with Hiroko this last time, she insisted I take photos of the aisles of a Japanese 7/11 so that my customers would know what a convenience store can be... and here are those photos...
So when you travel to Japan, please don't overlook the lowly convenience store, and know that 7 & I Holdings, the Japanese corporation that is 7/11 in Japan, is the largest retail and distribution corporation in Japan. Who knew????!!!!
Tip for Design Walls
I was teaching last weekend and learned from a woman in the class a great idea for a design wall. She went to Walmart and purchased twoflannel backed table protectors. The flannel was very good quality and held the fabric pieces very firmly in place. She sewed the two together and had a very large and inexpensive design wall.
Moda has come out with a new line of variegated batiks with some drop dead gorgeous colour combinations... and I have them in stock now. Here are some examples... To see them all, see the Moda site and key in Aurora...
New Dupioni Silk Frame It Kits
Some new Frame It kits have come about after Irene, Maria and I did some playing... I think you'll like them. They include the Presto Sheer for backing the silk so it doesn't fray. We've put them on at the show discount price of $99 and they are coming to the Island with me!
Change to Summer Hours... For July and August, I'll be open Mondays 10-5, but not on Saturdays unless you call ahead to make an appointment. Things get pretty quiet in the quilting world for those months, and this means I'm free to head out on a Saturday if no one needs to shop:-)
Christmas in July Sale & Kickoff for the Third Annual Challenge!!!!
I'll be having a one day sale Saturday July 25 10-5 (I know... I just said I'm not open Saturdays, but this is an exception). Everything in the store will be at least 15% off... more details to follow... phone and email orders included. And I'll be kicking off this summer's challenge. I'll be putting together kits of coordinating fabric bolt ends. Your challenge will be to make a quilt... any size... using some of each of the fabrics on the front of the quilt. Other fabrics can be added. Quilts are due back Thursday October 22. My fall sale will be Saturday October 25... Quilts will be hung for viewing and those who attend the sale will each get a vote. Great prizes as usual for 1,2, and 3rd viewers' choice.
