Woven cottons hold a special place in my heart and the Japanese are masters at creating the most texturally interesting wovens you can imagine. This quilt was designed to celebrate the Japanese artisans' skills with texture and clean design. I was aiming to honour the simplicity and understatement of the Japanese aesthetic. The result is a quilt that is texturally satisfying, calm, and wonderful to wrap yourself up in!
The many varied shades of cream and beige in the background small squares produce a quiet yet interesting setting for the three feature 16-block squares. The pops of coral and aqua are cheerful but not overwhelmingly sweet.
As with most of my quilt kits, the fabrics used are a mix of textures so that the finished quilt has a tactile as well as visual interest. Always my fabrics are selected from lines that offer the best quality, so the finished quilt will last a lifetime. This quilt is Japanese woven cottons with a binding of Japanese printed cotton.
This project is suitable for both beginners and more experienced quilters. The kit includes fabric for top and binding, pattern, and a lightweight woven cotton fusible interfacing to stabilize the outer edges of the quilt top before sandwiching and quilting. This ensures that the quilt top stays on the square while you are finishing the quilt and there is no fraying of the woven cottons along the outer edge of the quilt.
The quilt finishes at 56" x 72". It will be fully machine washable and dryable when finished. I don't recommend washing the fabrics prior to piecing the quilt top.
