The natural environment of the West Coast, my home, leads to an appreciation of the richness and variety of the colour gray... we see it in rain, in the rocks, in the skies, in the forest and in the ocean. I wanted to create a quilt that would celebrate the variety that is possible with the colour gray. The soft palette I chose for Nani Katachi includes subtle prints from Japan, cotton/linen blends by Robert Kaufman, cotton prints and a couple of batiks! This gives the quilt a textural diversity that adds interest and depth. This original design was conceived to allow me to explore shape making and visual depth and texture. The resulting quilt has a contemporary aesthetic which is both calming and interesting at the same moment. This quilt will fit comfortably into a wide variety of home decor settings.

Nani Katachi ("What shape is this?" in Japanese) consists of a simple rectangular block that is sliced at an angle and pieced with fabric from another sliced rectangle. The odd angle allows us to make interesting shapes in a very simple way. This quilt is suitable for a beginner quilter, but the design can be interesting to work with for more advanced quilters as well.

Variation in light and texture encourages the eye to quietly roam from shape to shape, travelling across the quilt. The subtlety of the overall design is enhanced by linear quilting that creates an effect of viewing the pattern through a rainy sky. The pattern includes instructions regarding the relative values of the different fabrics you will choose, in order to help you ensure that the shapes created in your quilt will be true to the original pattern. For the kit, the fabrics are kitten in number order to make it easy for you to know which fabric goes where! The kit includes all fabric for the top and binding, and the pattern.

You have the option of buying this kit with backing fabric or without, and with quilting thread or without. Backing fabrics are chosen to complement but not compete with the quilt design and are again premium quality quilting cottons. The particular quilting thread is a Superior King Tut that has one inch variations of dark and light grey, creating the rainfall effect.

The quilt finishes at 63" x 74". It is a great size for use as a throw on a couch or chair, or as an accent piece in a bedroom. The clean lines create a quilt that fits comfortably in a contemporary decor. It is ideal for use as a cuddle-under throw in your sitting room, or as a bed throw to add interest and extra warmth on cold nights.
