In creating this quilt I was inspired by the many shades of blue found in our ocean up here in the Pacific northwest. I also wanted something that would represent the many interlocking circles of connection that we have in our lives. Not wanting to be too somber and serious about all this, I've named it "Whirligigs"! While I originally created this quilt in 2016, I've been asked many times to create another kit for the quilt and have finally found a grouping of fabrics that will give the movement and depth that I want for this quilt. So Whirligigs 2022 is born!
The quilt is sized to be a full twin bed covering (66" x 85"), with drape on both sides and on the end. However it also works fine as a throw that is great to cuddle under or to use as an accent across the end of a larger bed or a sofa.
The fabrics are a mix of very high quality quilting cottons... there are Moda fabrics designed by Janet Clare, RK printed cottons, AGF solids and also batiks all blended to create a quilt that is texturally as well as visually interesting. The fabrics will all play very nicely together and the finished quilt is completely suitable for washer/dryer care.
The orange peel blocks are made with inset orange peels, not appliqued, so that the finished quilt will be exceptionally sturdy. The curved piecing is easy to do and well described in my pattern. I've designed the templates so that the orange peel floats in the block so that corner matching does not become a matter of rigorous matching and difficult piecing. Templates are provided for the orange peel block components.
The kit contains pattern and the fabric for quilt top and binding. There is an option to purchase the backing fabric shown in the kit photo.
